DescriptionThis oval dish would originally have had a companion bowl much like the Basket-form bowl. The interior of the dish is divided into five distinct parts. This includes, the rim, which is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a reserve at the top for the coat of arms; a carved, open work area, which would have been executed when the clay was hardened and before being glazed and fired; a three part center, which includes an underglaze cobalt blue fish scale design, a white open band and the central decoration of a series of palaces, bridges and waterways. This design is typical of Nanking ware, which was made for export in the early 19th century to both Europe and America. The underside of the dish is glazed but not decorated. On View
