DescriptionThis dish is decorated with heavy overglaze enamels depicting a multitude of richly colored flowers over a black enamel ground. There is an as yet unidentified heraldic mark on the mid upper interior of the dish. Daniel Nadler has published a similar example of this dish and heraldic mark. He refers to the pattern as a late version of the tobacco leaf pattern, which first became popular in the late 18th and early 19th century. The dish was made for order, probably for an English family. Where some of the enamels have worn, one can get a glimpse at the production process for this dish. There appears to be a glaze applied directly over the body of the dish, which was then fired as a blank. The design appears to have been outlined on the surface of the blank and the overglaze enamels applied into the outlined areas. The dish was then glazed and fired a second time to secure the enamels to the surface. On View
