DescriptionThis dish is executed on an "eggshell" porcelain body; the design is in overglaze enamels of the type called famille rose in the West and fen ts'ai by the Chinese. The back of the dish is colored in a ruby pink enamel from which derives the term "ruby-back." This technique was apparently known by the end of the earlier K'ang-hsi period, demonstrated by a bowl in the British Museum that bears a cyclical mark corresponding to the year 1721. The design is based on a painting from a series called Ten Prized Dogs by the Jesuit artist-missionary to China, Giuseppe Castiglione, known to the Chinese as Lang Shih-ning. The subject depicted is the dog Yellow Leopard. The dish bears a six-character reign mark of Yung-cheng in underglaze blue as well as a seal of a type normally associated with paintings. These indicate that the dish was made as a "Treasure of the Hall for cultivating Hearts," or the Yang Hsin-tien, which housed the bureau of works in the early years of the Ch'ing dynasty. On View
