DescriptionA dramatic explosion of color and design fills the front of this huipil. Against a background of white cotton cloth with purple vertical stripes characteristic of the weaving of Santiago Atitlán, modern weavers have taken to embroidering detailed portraits of the different birds that live in the mountains around Lake Atitlán. In this piece the birds are even decorated with glass beads bought at the local store, which along with the velvet neck and arm trim, make this an extra special daily use huipil. Given how popular Santiago Atitlán textiles have become amongst collectors, this huipil may have been made specifically for sale.
