DescriptionThis mountain formation is created from a spinach-colored green nephrite. Its triangular form creates the illusion of high rocks that have been faceted to promote the further illusion of depth. There are willow trees on one side and pines on the other. A stream rushes down through the center where an old man holds a large fish that he has taken from a basket to show a lady and a little girl. On the reverse, there is a man with a hat on the back of his head, standing and patting the head of a small boy seated beside him. This sculpture was probably made to decorate either the desk or the curiosity shelves of a wealthy member of the nobility. With its matching wave-base, it would appear to represent the Peng-lai, the Isle of the Blessed. On View
