DescriptionMost immigrants retained their cultural identities as they were assimilated into American society. As documented by Berenice Abbott, the rich ethnic legacy of the 'old country' was reflected in the "cities within a city" of the Lower East Side. In Little Italy, one of the most famous immigrant neighborhoods, markets have always catered to ethnic tastes and customs. Store windows display hanging cheeses and meats, shelves were lined with wines, oils, and pastas, and pastry shops and cafes abound. If Abbott assumed she was recording a dying locale, she was mistaken. Little Italy is still a colorful and popular destination for New Yorkers and visitors alike, who come to purchase Italian specialty foods and dine in the many excellent restaurants.
