DescriptionIn the late 1930’s and 1940’s, a number of artists interested in Guatemalan textiles made sets of colored renderings, in response to a lack of adequate color photographs. The famous Guatemalan artist of Quiché Maya descent, Carlos Mérida, completed his own twelve-page folio of traditional Guatemalan costume in the 1930’s. This depiction features a woman in the traditional clothing of Nebaj, surrounded by decorative elements. Many similar costumes from Nebaj are on display in this exhibition.
