    DescriptionIn his appropriation of the comic strip, Grooms shares a Pop interest with Roy Lichtenstein. However, Grooms' work relies on a proliferation-in-small of original cartoon imagery, rather than a simplification-in-large of existing comic strip imagery. Nor does Grooms make use of the dialogue balloon, so integral to Lichtenstein's work. To further distinguish the two, Lichtenstein stylistically imbued his imagery with an anonymous, commercially slick appearance, while Grooms' work is characterized by an personal, idiosyncratic style. Iconographically Sunday Funnies offers a slice of New York City neighborhood street life that comically, but perceptively, describes the multi-cultural urban microcosm that defines Manhattan. Theatrical perspective is established via the large hulking figure in the foreground, behind which a cast of quirky characters abounds without hierarchical emphasis.
