DescriptionThe practice of chewing coca leaves began on the eastern slopes of the Andes as early as 3000 BCE. Female coqueras are often shown sitting on the ground rather than on a bench (Labbe 1986:144). Hammered gold cones covering the breasts suggest the elegant geometric goldwork associated with the Carchi. The figure is also depicted wearing a beaded necklace with a large polished stone pendant.
