    DescriptionChorrera ceramists developed an innovative double vessel whistling bottle. The pitch of the whistle was carefully regulated and in this example the musical implication of the whistle was emphasized by the inclusion of a bird on the blind spout (Lathrap: 1975:37). Iridiscent painting was a significant development during this period. A thin slip of clay containing iron oxide was applied before the initial firing to give a lustrous skin. A second firing in a smoky, closed kiln, enabled the potter to produce a smudged, black finish which accumulates under the surface of the red slip producing the iridescence.
