DescriptionThe shape and glaze of this piece may have been inspired by earlier Song dynasty Ju ware examples in the imperial palace collection. Ju ware refers to a high-fired pottery of a light green or lavender color produced as tribute ware. Less than one hundred examples of this ware survive today. Bulb bowls of this type were typical accoutrements on the desk of the literati in which narcissus and other small bulb plants were grown. While the Song example would probably not have any additional decoration, this example has a pair of applique zhi or split-tail dragons forming handles at either end.On View
