DescriptionThis large water jar is a more elaborate version of the Jicote polychrome jar painted with a jaguar face also included in this exhibition. It too has a large globular body, restricted neck, and flaring rim. In this example the diagnostic feline face has been painted on the vessel in red and black, and a modeled feline head has been added for emphasis. The entire upper surface is covered in red swirling geometric designs. A vessel this elaborate was certainly used by a high ranking chief, perhaps as a container for the fermented drink chicha that was shared at clan feasts. On View
