DescriptionMany Maya ceramic pieces were individually hand crafted but molds became more popular later in the Classic period when demand for incense burners and figurines increased. Some of the incense burners included in this exhibition have mold-made faces and hand-modeled bodies, showing that mold-made pieces were often re-touched by hand to yield a unique piece without loosing the efficiency of mass production. This mold was used to produce a smiling face with an ornate headdress. The exterior of the mold is decorated with a standing lord.On View
