DescriptionThis piece features a cartoon-like character called Oval, who sits atop a "cosmos ball," Murakami's name for the sphere covered with smiling flowers. The meditating figure is loosely based on a Japanese Buddha sculpture. Its multiple faces embody the full spectrum of human emotions and states of being: happiness, anger, wakefulness, sleep. The cosmos ball holds a CD with music composed and performed especially for this project by the Tokyo-based duo ZakYumiko. Inside is a lotus flower, a form often used as a pedestal for Buddhist deities and a symbol of cosmic consciousness. On View
